Amrita started her career as a 4 year old, with advertising. Her first TVC was for a local footwear company in Kerala. After which, over the course of her childhood she did over 50 commercials for prominent brands includingRasna, Ruffles Lays, Glucon-D, Dabur, etc. She was the face of Lifebuoy Soaps packaging for over two years. More recently she has been seen in commercials for Sunsilk, Gitts Processed Foods, etc.
Her stint with television started when she was 9 years old with a drama show in which she played Gautami Gadgil's niece. Right after which she bagged her own show at 11 years of age- Fox Kids on Star Plus. She was seenanchoring Fox Kids, a cartoon show on Star Plus for about 5 years, making her character of Miss India hugely popular, especially amongst the kids.She however became the country's sweetheart with her first film in 2002-Anubhav Sinha's Tum Bin, where she played the pivotal part of Milli. Her performance was loved and appreciated and she went on to get nominated as Best Child Artiste in several Lobbies.
Post Tum Bin, Amrita continued withtelevision. When she was 14, she was chosen to be part of India's first Reality Show titledKya Masti Kya Dhoom which she co-anchoredalongside Bollywood Actress sonali Bendrefor over two years.
She went on to do various television series and dramas through her adolescence, along with her academics. Amongst others, she worked on tv shows like CATS- Sony, Smriti-Star Plus, Koi Apna Sa- Zee TV, Kya Haadsa Kya Haqeeqat, Star Bestsellers- Star Plus,Rishtey- Sony, Saath Phere- Zee TV, Yeh Meri Life Hai- Sony. Her last television drama, where she played one of the lead protagonists Sanskriti was Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai forZee TV before she took a break from television.
At 16, she went on to do her most critically acclaimed work yet far. A Malayalam Film-Manjupoloru Penkutty directed by Kamal. The story focused around a 16-year-old school girl in Kerala who was tormented by and rose against her sexually abusive stepfather. The film dealt with a real issue and made waves for its bold subject through the Southern Industry. It was later dubbed and re-released in more languages across the Southern States, including Kannada and Telegu. Amrita's work in the film brought her accolades and critical fame and she was nominated by the State for the National Awards as Best Actress. Amrita has mentioned in her interviews that as a Performer, being nominated for the National State Awards has been the most gratifying point in her career. Though she was offered many pivotal roles in daily soaps she preferred episodics over dailies as she found it fresh and challenging. she had worked many episodic series and was appreciated a lot for her performances.She went on to do one of her most defining roles with Rajshri Films, playing the character of Chotti in Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah.The character of Chotti was that of a dark skinned girl, and brought forth the prejudices and misogyny within the country that is extended towards darker skin over fairer skin. Her performance in Vivaah was hugely appreciated by critics and the audience and she was nominated for Best Supporting Rolethrough various Lobbies. Amrita has repeatedly been quoted saying- "Vivaah was one amongst the biggest milestones and turning points of my career. I cannot be grateful enough to him Sooraj Barjatya for being the teacher and guide he has been to me through and since the film. And for bringing me onto the map of every city in India". -Amrita Prakash, The Hindustan Times. 2009.Amrita went on to work with Rajshri Filmspost Vivaah and played the character of Sandhya in their next venture Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi. She played a small part in Dharma Productions We Are Family and continued with Bollywood Films and more work in the South.
Amrita again took a break from acting to complete her education. She holds a Master's Degree in Commerce and Business Administration from The University of Mumbai.
After her Masters she took up the show Ek Rishta Aisa Bhi for Sony Pal. She played the lead protagonist, Dipika on the show. The show went ended in March 2015.
