I'd that pressure also coming from this
family also
the pressure of lolo's younger sister
will she be as good as lolo
as successful as lolo
how will it be
and of course everything else was history
after that
but I'd my fresh air of struggle
which is different
which obviously people
try to brush under the carpet
if I demanded something
I've been replaced
it's not like
really
ya ya
there're been times
it's just that you don't hear about it
people even now they're like oh step mom
certain comments and people say that
and for what because I've no idea
because that's not the case
Hey guys so it's
International Women's Day
and I've a guest
who I would like to introduce with
one word
I'll not say it
I'll just show it to you
Unbeatable
unbeatable at everything she has done
unbeatable at everything she's going to do
welcoming Kareena Kapoor Khan
who's been re writing the Bollywwod
rule book and how
only on PINKVILLA for Women Up
Thank you
I can't tell you I want to give you
the biggest hug
for doing this
and
why
it's like an real honor to be on your show
How sweet
I think it's real honor for me to
have you on this show
Kareena I've to start of by
the person that you're
has it ever happened when
you felt that you're not treated equally
you know I think
in this industry of course a lot has been said
and a lot goes on to be said
but I think that you know
In my situation I say that of course
sometimes you do feel that you're not
getting as much
as a male star
some point of course when I started of
now of course a lot has changed
But I think I've been kind of girl
who's always still been confident in myself
you know I've never lost that steam and
that confidence that is something you know
people just need to have that
That's why I tell everybody you know
where your confidence
and where it you know
wear it hard
because that's where you need it the most
you know
when you started of you were
one of the fewest
you know in Kapoor family
I think there was a norm that
daughters were not allowed to be in movies
Karishma Kapoor changed that and
than it was you
how difficult was it for you
at that point to make the decision
and what was the family's reaction when
you have seen Karishma go through that
you know convincing the family
how difficult was it for you guys to do that
back then
you know actually my parents have been
really supportive like mom and dad both were
like quite open to certain things
you know of course and also much more
when it came to me because
you know obviously we had
generation gap than between lolo and me
I just feel that lot of people looked at me
as lolo's sister but
which of course I'm still supremely proud of
I love it when everyone says that
I miss that when everyone says that
you know Karishma's younger sister
because I think whatever I'm
has a lot to do with lolo
also you know because
they looked at me
everyone looked at me
whether it was Amir
Akshay
all of lolo's co stars
newly because I was back you know
on the set
and everyone I would be
you know lurking around on the shoot
behind the camera
admiring her
learning from her
looking from you know like
aspiring to be there
so I think that you know that
was something you know in me
something that I'm very very proud of
but I had my own struggle as breaking away
from that you know when you're
attached to also lolo's you know
darling of the 90's
I think she was the biggest superstar
of 90's
ya she was she had like you know
14 - 15 blockbusters in a row
so I'd that pressure also coming from this
family also
the pressure of lolo's younger sister
will she be
you know as good as lolo
as successful as lolo
how will it be
and of course everything else was history
after that but
I'd my fresh air of struggle
which is different
which obviously people
try to brush under the carpet
that obviously she didn't have struggle
which I don't know why because
it's just like you know
star kids don't have their fresh air of struggle
but you know also so much is talked about
like you said about nepotism today
but nepotism is also gifted as actors
like you and lolo
I don't know
I obviously anything you say about it
is just gonna be taken in a wrong
in a wrong context but
you know the ideas that there are
so many superstar children
I'm sorry to say who have not made it
ya exactly
so if you're going to say
if you're somebody's daughter or
somebody's son and you know
it's gonna
it's not
but of course it might open
as a door give you an opportunity
of something like that
yes it does but
if after that the door is shut than what
you know also different kind of struggle
that you had to go through in the beginning
was I think you were on heavier side
in the beginning and than you
than you completely and that time
you know heroines were like
only looked up like
they should be desirable
ya like they'd to be very objectified
they were
in that time
till I mean like
what 10 - 12 years ago
so was it a struggle for you at that point
did you face a little bit of bullying
when you were young
No I don't think bullying
I was always happy in my
size and shape
I was very ya I was slightly chubby
and I was always chubby even in my
first film also you know
but I was very like listen
I love my Parathas
I love my
I'm a proper Punjabi Kuddi
I love it
and I'm very proud of it
and I can't be any other way
and I'm here for my talent
I want to sell my talent
I'm not here for anything else
and of course after that the pressure yes
of wanting to be like
oh people are like no but she's very good
she's good in front of the camera
but will she look good in glamorous roles
this as also happen
ya
so than that
had to be there because than
eventually that glamorous thing has to
kind of you know take over
but even when you did that
the good thing about the people like you
Sonam I think you look amazingly well when
where ever you go
but the good thing is that you don't set
unreal beauty standards for women
because a lot of women are actually looking
up to you and
when you say you're confident in
whatever size you're
and the fact that you do interviews
without make up and go everywhere
without make up
it's a thumb's up
this plastic world let's be honest
I'm like I can't do it
I don't know maybe it's age
or I don't know what it is
but I'm just like
Now I can't
that's why I'm like oh no interviews
and all I'm like
they've to I'm very happy please
come and interview me but
I wanna be in my jeans and shirt
I can't sit in pretty dress and look
like that I've done that also but
But do you think there are unrealistic
beauty standards set
specially for women in society
which they've to match up to
most of the time in their life
I think so now especially because of
Instagram and everybody having their
beach bikini body I think people are
wilting in pressure of like you know
Oh god now from vegan and now
I'm gluten free and now I'm sugar free
and now I think we all forgotten
to just kind of
live
we forgotten the meaning of life
we're lost somewhere between this whole
you know running behind the sugar frees
gluten free
the whole you know trip
people say they wanna be healthy but
it's not that I think
I think it's just the
Myth
ya just the tag that I want to be healthy
as a person you've balanced it
you've done films like Jab we Met
and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum
where your characters have been iconic
similarly you've also been part of films
like Chameli
or Dev and Omkara
Do you thing in the beginning
people slot you in a certain way
where they thought that
she can't do it
ya of course they want to constantly
but it's good na
because than people and they've
you know constantly throw challenges at you
than you
kind of try and prove them wrong
and that's what validation
you know that was something
that was there
because a lot of people were like
you can't do a role like Chameli
you just 22 you don't even know
what it's like
so
that happened
and than constantly it was like
whether it was in Omkara also it was
such a stellar cast and
of course and what a beautiful performance
ya and it was so much pressure that
there was so many brilliant actors around
so I think I like to also have a liitle bit
of that you know kind of challenege
going it's important
when we talk about re writing bollywood rules
the first thing that comes to my mind is
I remember this Koffee with Karan episode
where he literally said that
you're the highest paid actress and
you'd come with Rani Mukherjee
Oh god
and you kind of changed that narrative
for women you know we talk about
paid disparity but you almost were
at a point where you are paid almost
as much as a male actors
sometimes even more than the male actors
you think that the shift came in there
and you fought for it
ya of course I did demand certain
fee and I think there's nothing wrong in it
one has to
you're putting in as much effort
you're putting in as much time
you're putting in a lot you know
so you want to get what you think
you deserve
and than once you
you know constantly
prove it I think there's no thing wrong
in demanding something like that
and of course now there's a lot of discussion
and you and cry around
the whole paid disparity and
what is so and so getting and
what is so and so now it's become such a
that time when
I think I said it was
nobody was really even
addressing that issue
ya but ever happen like
when you know
you've gone to meet somebody
some producer and all
like Priyanka said in some interview
she met a producer who said
you're very easily replaceable
because you're a heroine
have you face that kind of a comment
do you remember any of mean comments
said about you
but I think ofcourse
if I demanded something I've been replaced
it's not like
really
ya ya there're been times
it's just that you don't hear about it
because like I said
we also have different kind of pressure
but it's not like oh
and I've also specially always battled
this image of having
you know a Diva or whatever
from where this came
which I think it started with Poo
and ended there only
it's like people that's the way they imagined
me you know
so I think now people are kind of
understanding
that's you know not the way life is
it's not always just
a bed of roses
so I think there was a time
Like I said Priyanka and me worked
around the same time
there was of course that time
where actresses were ya
If not her than someone else
but I think in today's times
it's a lot more different
It is impossible I think
because actresses like you
you guys have paved that way
I think producers directors are now
saying that no we want to make
this film with so and so
But addressing that Diva tag
every heroines
are tag something
for you it was the Diva tag
and I think they try to box you in
that tag for the longest time
because poo like you said
How many times have you heard this
does that annoy you
it annoys
did you ever give it back to them
Earlier I used to now I'm like
now I'm like un affected
now because of course there's so many
years of experience where I think
I've just become a lot more
melo
zen
I'm in zen mode now
after 20 years if I'm in not a zen mode
than you know there's something
seriously wrong out there
Ya maybe in a way I was very
open and brash
but I was also like 17 - 18
you know like
you've kind of changed a game for women
when it comes to every kind of
stereotypes that they are boxed in
How many times did people tell you
that don't get married at the
peak of your career
Of course everybody I met
like anybody and everybody
there's not like one person
really
ya
like did anyone in your family also tell you
that no maybe you shouldn't be doing
it at this point maybe you should waited
out for some more time
No infact my mom was very relaxed
she was like if this is what you
wanna do and it makes you happy
you should do it
you also made your conscious choices
that is something very important for
any person, women, or a men
so Saif spoke very openly about
how he was targeted after
getting divorced
you fell in love with him
while he was already divorced
do you think that people try to
like pin you as you know
the other person the other women
do you think that also happen in a society
back then a lot more
Ya I mean people even now
they're like oh step mom
certain comments and people say that
and for what because I've no idea
because that's not the case you know
I don't look at my life like that
and I don't think anybody should either
Infact I don't know why
probably look at that word in right way
if you're saying it
don't say it negative
connotation
yes attached to it
because everything is not negative
it doesn't have to be
but the great thing is that
the family is so united
ya
you are there for each other
that's what matters
ya exactly
and you know it's fine
I mean please what is the big deal
I don't understand that you know
everything is made out to be
such a big you and cry and discussion
like I said I think it's the digital age also
that allows a lot of things out
also when it comes to motherhood
and pregnancy
I think you changed every
I think you change the way people
looked at it
and I'm not talking about actors only
I'm talking about
the whole nation
I thing that whole thing
that if you're pregnant you can't go to work
ya
it's your choice
the fact that you said that it's my choice
you didn't say that you should work
you didn't say that you shouldn't work
which is the greatest thing
you worked till a last week
till last week
I remember
was that a conscious choice that you made
It was ya like you said it was my choice
it was something that I wanted to do
and it was not something that I was trying
to prove a point to anyone
It was something I'm used to working
I love my job
and if people are signing me and
wanting to do ads
or wanting to do things
so I was happy to do the movie
So I was like what is wrong with it
as long as I'm looking after myself
I think there is nothing wrong in a women
going to work
and for that matter even working
after giving birth
there are ways and means to tackle after
maternity leave
there are ways and means to
work and of course with a lot of help
and family help
and other help
than I think one can try and balance a work
life with having a child
and do you think the notion changed
I think I remember that a lot of people
said that
actresses have their own shelf life
means after marriage they become Bhabhi's
they become Aunties and after
giving birth to baby they're
out of the picture that who will sign them
ya ya of course absolutely
But I thing that's like
that's very dated now
it's like redundant
I mean it's like any
sorry if any director or producers even says
that today I think it's a appaling
ya it is
it is
it is appalling to another level
I'm like please
Of course my decisions have changed
a little bit like it has affected
he made a slight shift in the way
people are thinking now in the industry
because if did it every young girl
is like okay fine if she can do it I can
It kind of left with
left producers also thinking like okay fine
there's nothing wrong in it
and also it was also Veere
the kind of film that I chose
that was so out there
the kind of film that was also commercial
yet it had like you know
a film about four girls
I think it was Rhea and Anil also who had
the faith
ever somebody told you that
you know you're at the peak of
your career don't do this
career will come to end
Of course
that one is always there
but people I think should realise that
also we're actors
we're allowed to do parts that we
love doing
which we know we'll enjoy doing
we've the right to choose
to decide that this is
a film or a part that I think I'll nail
irrespective a lenght of the role
I don't need 2 hour
2 an hours of run time
to prove my talent
I can prove my talent in single shot
in one shot you look and say
oh my god fine she's nailed the part
or she's looked amazing and she's done
So I never had that insecurity or that fear
why does it have to slotted that
Oh now I have to be the main lead
or heroine of this film
I'm not thinking like that
you're way beyond that right now
It's not necessary that I've to be like
okay now I'm a heroine so I've to
have my 3 songs I've to look fab
and I've to look my 6 pack has to show
and I have to be really cool in it
I've to be on the poster of the film
Technically trust me that's what everybody
wants
but I'm like I'm not thinking
otherwise how will that last 20
and Inshallah and other 20
Listen 20 you've to last another 50
and before we go
we are moving on to the next segment
it's a game segment
it's called women we love
because it's like the tittle
it's about women we love
so let's see how you fair and there's
this hamper for you
oh there is a hamper
I love you so much
we are back with
my favorite
your favorite
to all of us favorite
Bebo
for the segment we call women we love
so basically it's a game
there are 7 cards like you can see
so you've to pick 5
and give me 5 of them
there are questions related to womens
and women centric films and stuff like that
there are different questions
you've to answer 3 of them correctly
and we give you a gift
let do it for the gift
so that's four
and that's five
so the first is the plot line of
a women centric film
so you've to guess the film from plot line
A dynamic young enterpreneur
Naina Sethi finds herself locked
in a hotel room with the cops
of a dead lover
she hires a pretigeous lawyer
to defend her
and they work together to find out
what actually happened
which film is this
ya it released last year
it released last year
it was a triller
yes yes yes
wait wait wait
I'll is it
was it like Tapsee Pannu
yes
Tapsee's film
Naam Shabana
no just think of a Hindi word
for revenge
Ya ya Badla
ya I knew Tapsee was in a film
but I couldn't put the name together
this is a guess who
this is very easy
I was crowned the Miss World in 2000
soon after I debut in film
opposite a huge super star
I got my first break through role
in a film where I played the villian
today I'm happily married
I'm still ruling the world
Priyanka Chopra Jonas
of course
what a film
I think Aitraaz was
what a journey
ya what a journey
I think you guys should do another
film together for sure
guess the film from the clues
this is my favorite
worlds favorite
means you should able to
Bhatinda
you can't ask me this
you can't ask me this
of couse
Hotel decent
Oh god
and Ratlam
Listen now this anybody
If they don't get it
they can't watch this episode
I don't think they should
Obviously Jab We Met
okay name 2 films
his is too tricky
name 2 films that were named after the
characters that Karishma Kapoor played
in the film
Fiza and Zubeidaa
wow
that was amazing
4 she already got
this also she will get
it's very easy it's guess who again
I was a child artist
born to a famous bollywood film maker
I made my big debut 7 years ago
and today I'm considered the most
powerful actress from the younger generation
Alia
ya
which film was Alia in
Sangarsh
she was that little kid
oh okay okay okay
so you've got a white wash
you got 5 on 5
can't get any better than this
so of course you deserve a hamper
and this is for you
how sweet
love you for doing this
I like goodies so I'm happy
But thank you so much
for doing this Kareena
because I don't think it would have been
it would ever been possible without having
you
Thank you
Thank you for having me here
